Feedback in Graphs
Although feedback is technically defined here as any information about performance that will allow you to change that performance, in this chapter I am going to emphasize feedback presented in graphic format. Graphed data have many advantages over charts, text, or data presented verbally.
Graphs show you at a glance where you are in relation to where you have been and where you are going. Graphed data allow you to see performance trends earlier, permitting a more timely response to potential problems and more immediate positive reinforcement.
Dean Tapp, consultant to a label-printing company, reports a case where press operators were given verbal feedback in an effort to increase sheets per hour on printing jobs. Verbal feedback, given by the supervisor, on current performance (usually given the following day) sounded something like this: “You ran 14,156 sheets per hour yesterday.” As you can see from Figure 12-1, performance deteriorated. As you will recognize, verbal feedback was actually a punisher because it caused performance to decrease. When the company began using systematic graphic feedback and reinforcement, performance improved dramatically.
